Biwa Pearl, Sterling Silver (925), AAAAA Zircon & Garnet encrusted earrings

Rare, antique, 1920’s, art deco influenced, biwa freshwater pearls, set in a solid Sterling Silver (925) earring mount, the stud backed earrings are hand encrusted with AAAAA Zircon & black Garnets.

Freshwater pearls, as opposed to saltwater pearls, which are grown in oysters, are the princes and princesses of mussels. Mussels like oysters, create a beautiful variety of pearls, with thick layers of nacre. Varieties include baroque, fireball, teardrop, rice, potato, ring, biwa, Keshi and round, all of which refer to their shape and size.

Freshwater pearls, similar to their extremely expensive, salt water cousins, come in a variety of shades, however unlike their cousins, whose price has rocketed since many of the oysters escaped during Covid, as they were not able to maintain their habitats, and the emergence of a newly identified virus, which has decimated production in the Akoya Oyster stocks.
